Estimate the Source Time Still Unwatched

Build a completed-duration subtotal and add the current position once.

Use a subtraction ledger, not a video-count guess

To estimate remaining YouTube playlist time, begin with a reviewed 1× total and reconstruct watched source time. Sum videos completed in full, then add the elapsed position inside the one video currently in progress. Subtract that watched amount from the known total. This method weights time directly and avoids treating every video as equally long.

The site does not read watch history or a player. The viewer supplies the progress snapshot manually. That makes a clear ledger important: completed rows and current position must be distinct so the current video is not subtracted twice.

Freeze the total and progress at one moment

Record the date and confirm that the playlist total and completed list describe the same snapshot. If the source changed between those steps, the subtraction may look valid while using mismatched versions. Recopy affected durations when the deadline matters.

List only fully completed videos in order. Next note the full duration and displayed elapsed position of the current video. If the viewer is between videos, use no current position. Do not put the current video’s full duration in the completed list unless it has actually been finished.

Work a complete example

Suppose the reviewed playlist total is 6:20:00. Four completed videos last 42:00, 1:05:30, 38:15, and 54:15. Their subtotal is 3:20:00. The current video is 48:00 long, and its displayed position is 17:30. Watched source time is therefore 3:37:30.

Subtracting from 6:20:00 leaves 2:42:30 of source time. The current video has 30:30 remaining, and later videos account for the other 2:12:00. Completion by duration is 13,050 watched seconds divided by 22,800 total seconds, or about 57.24%.

The summary should state all three layers: fully completed 3:20:00, current progress 0:17:30, and remaining 2:42:30. An isolated percentage cannot show whether the current item was counted correctly.

Avoid the most common double count

If the current video appears among completed rows and its position is also added, watched time is overstated. A similar error occurs when the completed list contains the current full duration even though only part was watched. Keep one boundary: rows before the current item are complete; the current item contributes only its elapsed position.

Order helps verify the boundary even though addition does not require it. A numbered ledger lets a viewer say “items 1–4 complete; item 5 at 17:30.” Duration-only input protects privacy, while position numbers maintain structure.

Handle skips and rewatching deliberately

A displayed source position can move forward after a skip. The formula treats everything before that position as source progress even if some content was not experienced. Rewinding and replaying uses extra clock time without increasing source completion. Decide whether the goal is source remaining, actual viewing effort, or learning completion.

The manual tool reports source remaining. It cannot measure attention, comprehension, skipped sections, quizzes, or time spent replaying. Keep a separate workload note when those facts matter.

Apply future speed after subtraction

Calculate remaining source time first. Then divide only the future media by the speed planned for it. In the example, 2:42:30 is 9,750 seconds. At 1.5×, future media time is 6,500 seconds, or 1:48:20. Add future notes and breaks afterward.

Past playback speed does not change how much source duration has been completed when progress is recorded from source positions. A thirty-minute clock session at 2× may cover about one hour of source, but the current source position is the clearer input.

Reconcile impossible results

Watched time cannot exceed the known total. A current position cannot exceed the current video’s full duration. If either occurs, inspect units, duplicated rows, mismatched snapshots, and whether the total includes the same subset. Do not clamp the value to zero or 100%; resolve the contradiction.

Invalid completed timecodes keep the result incomplete. A provisional number is useful for error finding, not for a hard deadline.

Privacy of manual progress

The formula needs durations and a source position, not titles, URLs, account access, or watch-history permissions. Values can remain in current browser memory and disappear on reset. A copied summary is controlled by the viewer and may reveal a schedule, so store it appropriately.
